NBTC Approval for Wireless Devices

TH-Unique ยท Independent from Thai FDA process ยท Must be obtained in parallel

When NBTC Review Is Requiredโ€‹

Medical devices incorporating any radio frequency communication technology require a separate approval from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) before commercial supply in Thailand.

This approval is completely independent of the Thai FDA/MDCD registration process and must be obtained as a separate process.

NBTC Approval Processโ€‹

The NBTC process typically requires:

  1. Type approval โ€” testing of the device's RF characteristics against Thai/NBTC standards (based on international standards for the relevant frequency bands)
  2. Test reports โ€” from NBTC-recognised testing laboratories (Thai labs or foreign labs with mutual recognition)
  3. Technical specification documentation โ€” frequency bands used, power output, modulation
  4. Application submission to NBTC
  5. NBTC approval issued โ€” certificate or approval letter

NBTC-Recognised Standardsโ€‹

NBTC recognises international standards for RF compliance:

  • ETSI EN standards (European)
  • FCC standards (US) โ€” in many cases accepted with Thai-specific modifications
  • IEC/CISPR standards for EMC

Confirm with your NBTC consultant which standards are accepted for your specific device's frequency bands.

Timeline Coordinationโ€‹

Start both processes in parallel. In many cases, NBTC and Thai FDA approvals can proceed simultaneously with significant time overlap, minimising total time to market.

Use a dual-specialist consultant

For wireless medical devices in Thailand, consider engaging a regulatory affairs consultant with experience in both Thai FDA and NBTC processes. The two approval tracks have different documentation and technical requirements.
