Overview
The relationship between UKCA marking and the Northern Ireland market — why UKCA is not accepted in NI, the UKNI indication, and what CE-marked devices can and cannot do.
UKCA marking is NOT accepted in Northern Ireland
The UKCA mark is the conformity mark for the Great Britain market only — England, Scotland, and Wales. The UKCA mark is not recognised in Northern Ireland (or in the EU).
For devices placed on the NI market: CE marking is required.
The UKNI indication
The UKNI indication (UK Northern Ireland) is a specific indication used alongside the CE mark when:
- A device has been assessed by a UK Approved Body (rather than an EU Notified Body), and
- The device is being placed on the Northern Ireland market
A device bearing the UKNI indication alongside the CE mark may be placed on the NI and GB markets — but NOT on the EU market. The UKNI indication signals that the conformity assessment was done by a UK body rather than an EU body, which limits its market reach.
